Northern Lights features a round up of award winning local Northern Ontario films selected from Sudbury's Music and Film in Motion.
REEL YOUTH 3:00 - 5:00 p.m

Reel Youth is a not-for-profit, media empowerment program supporting young people to create and distribute films about their visions for a more just and sustainable world.

Insightful and entertaining, the festival collects films from across Canada, the US and abroad to put together an engaging evening of some of the best youth filmmaking today.
IMAGINENATIVE Shout Out Loud 7:00 - 9:00 p.m

ImagineNATIVE is an international festival that celebrates the latest works by Indigenous peoples on the forefront of innovation in film, video, radio and new media. Each year the festival tours its youth programs from its most recent festival to Northwestern and Northeastern Ontario, contributing to the artistic vibrancy of these communities and sharing works that reflect Indigenous perspectives and stories. The Northern Ontario Film + Video Tour exists to provide communities accessibility to Indigenous-made film and video, encouraging youth to explore the creation of film and video through watching the work and discussion and providing an opportunity to the larger community

A historic look at the trial of Louis Riel based on the actual trial transcript and proceedings. Madman, Martyr or Métis nation builder? This is Louis Riel’s last speech before he was sentenced to death for treason in Canada.
2.To Put Food on Their Plate 7:00 min (Thunder Bay, Corey Lickie)
Filmed in Thunder Bay a guitar playing busker looks for change in his life, as he remembers the choices he's made that led him to the streets and the sacrifices he made for his family. 3. My Union My Town 6:00 min (Stuart Cryer, Sudbury)
A documentary by Sudbury filmmaker filmed in 2010 at the Steelworkers March in Sudbury as The strike by the mine, mill and smelter workers of the United Steelworkers in Canada against Vale enters its tenth month. 4. Patola’s Twist 10:00 min (Thunder Bay, Matt Schween)
An intimate and personal journey through the life of 53 year old adventurer and passionate outdoorsman, Derrik Patola. The film uncovers Derrik's early childhood and reveals what made him decide to forever follow his heart and continue living his dreams no matter what the future entails. 5. 1. Family Stones 22:00 min (Reel Youth, Nepal) A touching and uplifting film about five Nepali children and two child solders, who have been rescued from the adult prison system.
2. Freedom Peace It Together 2:50 min (Peace It Together, Vancouver, BC,) Hand-drawn paintings and meticulously rendered rotoscope images blend to create a poetic meditation on individual freedom and hope.
3. Detention 4:50 min (ViewFinders, Halifax, NS) A Kids first visit to detention breathes new life into an otherwise dull day and shows the creative ability of a group of young people to entertain themselves.
4. Static Fiction 4:00 min (Michael Bradley, Delta, BC) Music creates a gateway into the realm of imagination.
5. Asphodel Meadows 6:00 min (Grant Jeffery - Lively High Film Festival, Cinefest 1st Place Student Film ) A young girl who loses her father in a wolf attack and bits of mythology and history and Biblical lore has started to imprint themselves on her physical world. As she copes with the death of her father, the loss of everything she cares about
6. Crossover 5:50 min (Big Picture Alliance, Philadelphia, PA.) A student-made rap video about crime, youth gangs and jail. created by residents of The Bridge, a drug and alcohol treatment center for teens in Philadelphia. The Big Picture Alliance educates disadvantaged and underserved youth in developing self-expression, life and job skills through the inspiring and collaborative process of creating media arts
7. Evolve 1:00 min (North Surrey Secondary School, BC) The crocodile hunter meets Work Safe BC.
8. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall 5:00 min (Greenfield, MN) A mysterious mirror reflects the truth to those who look upon it
9. In My Shoes 5:00(Urban Arts Partnership, New York, NY, 5 min) Raises awareness of NYC youth homelessness by debunking stereotypes and exposing homeless youth living under the radar.
10. Killers of the Earth 1:00 min (Jeffrey Bruno, LA, Official selection, Louisiana shorts Fest) Mash-up of computer animation, still photos and stock footage featuring two cheerful aliens demolish planets for a living.
11. Joanne Tawfilis - Peacemaker Hero 5:00 min (USA, Slater Jewell-Kemke) Joanne Tawfilis hopes to encircle Egypt's great pyramids in 2010 with twelve miles of murals creating art that's either painted or sewn onto canvas. Eventually, these canvasses will be joined together to create the longest painting in the world that would "teach children understanding and respect."
12. Transatlantique 8:00 min (Westlake School, Hollywood, CA) Westlake School, Hollywood, CA, 8 min) Eleven year old Milena lives in France while older brother Jean Luc lives and works in L.A. Separated by language + divorced parents, their strained relationship is challenged during an afternoon together
13. Sparks in the Night 3:00 min (Ben Kadie, Bellevue, WA.) Set in black, white and red 1940, "Sparks in the Night" humorously follows detective Leon Spars as he closes in on notorious lawbreaker, the Jerry Walker and the Speeder Brothers.
14. The Keepers 17:00 min (Rob Roy, Sudbury Royal Productions) Locally shot skateboarding video featuring Sudbury locations with lots of spills and tricks

The story of 16-year-old Jedda Rae Hill, a young African-American-Aboriginal girl who doesn't like to conform to the norm: she skates, does boxing and loves watching and dancing to Bollywood movies. 2. This is me 3:00 (USA, Director: David Sam)
A young man speaks about his experience of being bullied as a teenager and tells the story of who he really is. 3. Go Get Dad 3:00 (Canada, Adam Garnet Jones)

Struggling with profound loss, a young boy attempts to open up to a stranger. 4 Our World 2:00 (Haida with subtitles, Kiefer Collison )
A bold short film stating that the community needs to listen to the youth because they are the future and must be heard. The power and vitality of future Indigenous leaders is explored in this thoughtful documentary. 5 For you mom Kir Otci Ntcotco 4:00 (Mariana Niquay-Ottawa)

The story starts in 1824 with a Scottish settler coming to Canada to run the Hudson Bay Post, a store for traders and travelers to sell and buy furs and commodities. The family is dealing with the first year in Canada. The story then intertwines with an Ojibwa man and daughter living on the land, defending their people’s land and rights. 10 Seeking Bimaadiziiwin 30:00 (Thunder Bay, Kelly Saxberg, Dave Clement)
This film deals with the tough issues of depression, suicide and racism and was shot on location in the city of Thunder Bay and on the Fort William First Nation 11 For Justice's Sake for John Moore 11:00 (Samantha Pollock, Ottawa)
John Moore spent 10 years in prison, for a crime he did not commit. John's story is one of terrible injustice and example of a long standing systemic issue - institutional racism towards aboriginal people in Canada.
